Facilitation, development and co-creation of a community-led garden project between September 2024 and April 2025 funded by The Cultural Spring in partnership with Sunderland City Council, Arts Council England and the UK Government. Service users at Sunderland Headlight met on a weekly basis to reimagine and update their shared outdoor space through supported, inclusive and carefully guided sessions. A consistent and welcoming structure enabled participants to build confidence, contribute ideas and take ownership of the evolving garden.

Delivery of creative, participatory workshops combining arts practice and gardening to explore approaches to mental health and wellbeing. Activities such as collage and clay modelling were used to support communication, idea generation and self-expression, allowing participants to shape the design of the space in an accessible and meaningful way. The process centred on creating a supportive environment where all contributions were valued.

Support of collaborative decision-making and group-led planning, encouraging participants to reflect on how to work together in a constructive and empowering way. Simple, democratic methods were used to guide discussion and agreement, alongside ongoing documentation to track progress and reflect on development. Consideration of future heritage and sustainability became an important part of the process, ensuring the space could continue to grow and adapt over time.

Embedding longevity and collective ownership within the Garden Collective, supporting a transition from facilitated sessions to participant-led activity. The group continues to meet on a weekly basis, with several service users now confidently leading sessions following guidance and encouragement. This shift reflects a sustained sense of ownership, ensuring the garden remains an active, evolving and community-led space.
